Why people come

You might be here because…

Some people arrive knowing exactly what’s wrong. Others just know something doesn’t feel right. Either is enough. People bring these things to counselling in Skipton, Keighley, and online across the UK.

Life feels overwhelming

There’s a lot to hold. Work, home, other people, the things you keep putting off. Some days it feels manageable. Other days it doesn’t, and you’re not sure where to start. Sometimes anxiety or a low mood sits underneath that; sometimes it is simply too much at once.

Your mind won’t slow down

Thoughts keep turning over, even when you want to rest. You might find yourself anticipating what could go wrong, or going back over conversations that have already finished. It’s tiring, and hard to explain to anyone else.

You’re hard on yourself

You notice what you get wrong more easily than what you get right. From the outside you might look as if you’re coping. Inside, it can feel quite different — and self-esteem can take a quiet knock over time.

Relationships feel difficult

With a partner, a parent, a friend, or someone you work with. You might keep ending up in the same patterns, feel distant from people you care about, or find it hard to say what you need.

You’re going through change

A move, a breakup, a new job, a loss, leaving something behind. Even changes you chose can leave you feeling unsettled. It can take a while to find your feet again.

You’re trying to work out who you are

What you want. What matters to you. Where you fit. This can come up at any age — not only when you’re young. Sometimes it arrives quietly, after years of doing what was expected.

You feel stuck

You know something needs to shift, but you’re not sure what, or how. Sometimes we find ways of coping that begin to take over — whether that’s alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, work, social media, or something else. Therapy isn’t about judgement. It’s about understanding what’s underneath those coping strategies, and finding healthier ways forward.

You’re carrying the weight of expectations

It can feel as though there’s always another standard to meet. Messages about how you should look, what success should mean, where you should be in life, or how well you should be coping can leave you constantly comparing yourself to others. Over time, that pressure can make it difficult to know what you want — separate from what you feel is expected of you.

These are only some of the reasons people get in touch. If none of them quite fit, that doesn’t mean therapy isn’t for you. You’re welcome to write and tell me what’s going on in your own words. If you’d like the practical details first, see sessions and fees.
